  • After centuries of ruling by France, Algeria has got independence on July 5, 1962. The country is dominated by the state, a legacy of the country’s socialist post-independence development model.
  • Algeria has 10th largest reserves for natural gas and ranks 16th in oil reserves globally. Hydrocarbons are the backbone of the economy, which enabled to maintain macroeconomic stability and amass large foreign currency reserves in the country.
  • In recent years the Algerian Government has stopped the privatization of state-owned industries and levied restrictions on imports and foreign involvement in its economy.
  • Since 2015, the government has strengthened its protectionist measures to limit its import bill and encourage domestic production of non-oil and gas industries.
  • The government also imposed other regulatory requirements on access to foreign exchange for imports since 2015.

  • Algeria has registered 3.6% growth in 2016. The growth is strongly affected by falling oil prices since 2014.
  • Agriculture accounts for 13% of GDP and employs 10.8% of the workforce, Industry represents 39% of GDP and employs nearly a third of the workforce and tertiary sector contributes 48% of GDP and employs nearly 60% of the workforce.
  • Decreasing revenues caused by falling oil prices has led to the reduced spending in the country.
  • In 2016, the government increased taxes on electricity and fuel, resulting in a modest increase in gasoline prices, however the country has refrained from reducing subsidies, particularly for education, healthcare and housing programs.
  • Expanding the economy apart from hydrocarbon exports, boosting the private sector, attracting foreign investments and providing employment are the major economic challenges in the country
