Jamaica Profile:
- Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. It is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the fourth-largest island country in the Caribbean.
- High unemployment exacerbates the crime problem, including gang violence fuelled by the drug trade.
- In 2006, Jamaica became part of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) as one of the pioneering members.
- Tourism is one of the major sectors in the economy with an estimated, 1.3 million foreign tourists visit Jamaica every year.
- In April 2014, the Governments of Jamaica and China signed the preliminary agreements for the first phase of the Jamaican Logistics Hub (JLH) – the initiative that aims to position Kingston as the fourth node in the global logistics chain, joining Rotterdam, Dubai, and Singapore, and serving the Americas.
Jamaica Economy:
- Jamaica is a mixed economy with both state enterprises and private sector businesses. Major sectors of the Jamaican economy include agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism, and financial and insurance services.
- Tourism and mining are the leading earners of foreign exchange. Half the Jamaican economy relies on services, with half of its income coming from services such as tourism.
- Earnings from remittances and tourism each account for about 15% of GDP, while bauxite/alumina exports have declined to less than 5% of GDP.
- Jamaica’s economy has grown on average less than 1% a year for the last three decades and many impediments remain to growth: a bloated public sector which crowds out spending on important projects; high crime and corruption; red-tape; and a high debt-to-GDP ratio.
- Jamaica has made steady progress in reducing its debt-to-GDP ratio from a high of almost 150% in 2012 to about 115% in 2017, in close collaboration with the International Monetary Fund.
